Scent of a Sketch

From September 28, So Fine Art Editions will host an evocative exhibition featuring  seven original etchings by Cliona Doyle, alongside the organic Burren Perfumery scents that inspired them.

Sadie Chowen, founder of The Burren Perfumery, first spotted botanical artist Cliona Doyle’s work in the Merrion Hotel and it immediately resonated with her. She saw a natural connection between the Irish artist’s ethereal sketches and her own Co Clare-based organic, handmade perfume range.

After commissioning Cliona to design the packaging for the range, Sadie and Cliona chose the subject of each artwork to reflect a particular aspect or season of the Burren.

Over the course of a year, Cliona recorded the plants and landscapes of the Burren on copper plates, then developed each work into her unique botanical style.

From the fresh spring flowers of the fragrant orchid for the Ilaun eau de parfum, through to red berries of hawthorn (above) for the Winter Woods eau de toilette, each perfume in turn found its muse.

The end result is both ethereal and elegant. Each of the Burren Perfumery’s seven perfumes is packaged in a bespoke box made of beautiful Italian paper from Fedrigoni and feature Cliona's botanical artwork corresponding to that scent’s Burren mood, with the line drawings etched onto the inside of the perfume bottles.

The Art of Perfume – Cliona Doyle, in collaboration with The Burren Perfumery opens on Thursday September 28 and runs until October 20, 2017. SO Fine Art Editions, 10 South Anne Street, Dublin 2.
