Step Inside Artist Gerard McGourty's Studio
Fermanagh-born Gerard McGourty is an artist-in-residence at Millrace Gallery in Blackrock. Ahead of his exhibition there, which opens on March 10, we spoke to him about his work.
In many ways an unconventional painter, Gerard came to art later in life, and is entirely self-taught. His free, unconstrained style is difficult to categorise, but easy to appreciate. He often tries to approach a canvas with an empty mind and see what comes of it, and uses texture and colour in intriguing ways. His paintings have most recently been exhibited in America and Italy, while ‘Paintings Unseen’ features work from 1990 to 2000, and runs in the Blackrock gallery until March 30.
